Revit 2022 – Board and Batten Cladding

March 24, 2022 By John Flanagan

Board and Batten Cladding

The images below show the assembly of an Exterior Board and Batten Wall.

When we look at the wall in 3D there isn’t any facing batten detail.

The easiest way to indicate vertical battens would be to add a surface pattern to the exterior wall face. We can create a custom pattern to do this.

Click Manage tab > Settings panel > Additional Settings drop-down > Fill Patterns.

Next, click the New fill pattern icon at the bottom of the dialogue box. Create a new Vertical Siding pattern with 400 mm spacing as shown.

You can now apply the vertical surface pattern to the exterior face of the wall. Select the wall and click edit type on the Properties palette. When the Type Properties dialogue box opens, click edit structure. In the Edit Assembly dialogue box, click to the right of the Exterior – Board and Batten wall finish name to access the Material Browser dialogue box. On the right-hand side of the dialogue box select Vertical Siding as the surface pattern. Click OK to close all dialogue boxes.

In a 3D view your wall should look like this.

This method of creating a board and batten wall will probably be fine for most construction documents as well as most visualisations. If more detail is needed, we can modify a curtain wall to show the battens in a more solid form. This method will be the topic of my next blog.
